Total Chess World Championship Tour

New FIDE-approved chess tour combining classical, rapid, and blitz

The Total Chess World Championship Tour is an ambitious new competition officially endorsed by FIDE, designed to crown an entirely new World Combined Champion across three time controls: fast classical, rapid, and blitz. The tour is organized by the team behind Norway Chess and launches with a pilot event in October 2026.

The format splits 24 players into four groups of six for a fast classical double round-robin. Group winners advance to a knockout featuring all three time controls. The full season launches in 2027 with four tournaments per year and a minimum prize pool of $2,700,000, including at least $750,000 for each of the first three events and $450,000 for the Finals.

Football star Erling Haaland is a strategic investor in the tour through his company Chess Mates, co-founded with Norwegian business leader Morten Borge. Haaland has become a significant owner of Norway Chess, bringing mainstream attention and credibility to the project.

The pilot event features 16 qualified players including Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and World Champion Gukesh. The "fast classical" format (45+30) is a deliberate compromise between the depth of classical chess and the pace modern audiences prefer.
