Tata Steel Chess Tournament
Annual super-tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands since 1938
Tata Steel Chess Tournament is one of the longest-running and most prestigious chess tournaments in the world, held annually in the coastal town of Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. The tournament traces its roots back to 1938, when it was first organised under the name Hoogovens, after the steelworks company that sponsored it. It later became the Corus Chess Tournament before taking its current name in 2011 when Tata Group assumed sponsorship.
The tournament features the world's elite grandmasters competing in a round-robin format, typically a 14-player field. It is often called the "Wimbledon of chess" for its combination of tradition, atmosphere, and field strength. Magnus Carlsen holds the record for most wins at the event with eight, while Viswanathan Anand has also won five or more times. Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, and virtually every world champion of the modern era has competed in Wijk aan Zee.
The 88th edition in January 2026 was won by Uzbek GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who claimed the title on his fourth appearance. That year's field was notable for being the youngest average age in the tournament's history, with even the oldest participant, Anish Giri, being just 31 years old. The event also hosts a Challengers group and an amateur section, making it a full festival of chess for players at all levels.
Beyond the Masters event, Tata Steel runs a sprawling amateur tournament called Tata Steel Chess Amateurs, drawing hundreds of club players from across the Netherlands and beyond. The seaside village of Wijk aan Zee transforms into a chess town for two weeks every January.
