Gibraltar Chess Festival
Major annual open chess tournament in Gibraltar since 2003
The Gibraltar Chess Festival is one of the strongest and most popular open chess tournaments in the world, held annually in Gibraltar since 2003. The event typically runs for eleven days in late January to early February, drawing hundreds of players from dozens of countries.
What makes Gibraltar special is its combination of elite-level competition and accessibility. Top grandmasters compete alongside club players in the same open Swiss-system tournament, giving amateurs the chance to face titled players over the board. The Masters section regularly features 2700+ rated GMs competing for significant prize money.
The festival goes beyond just the main tournament. Side events include rapid and blitz tournaments, lectures, simultaneous exhibitions, and social events that create a genuine chess community atmosphere. The compact geography of Gibraltar means everything is within walking distance, and the Mediterranean climate in January is a welcome bonus for players coming from northern Europe.
Formerly sponsored by Tradewise Insurance (2011 to 2018), the tournament is now known as the Gibraltar International Chess Festival. It remains one of the must-attend events on the annual chess calendar, consistently attracting some of the strongest open tournament fields anywhere in the world.
