Gibraltar Chess Festival
Major annual open chess tournament in Gibraltar since 2003
The Gibraltar Chess Festival is one of the most celebrated open tournaments in international chess, drawing top grandmasters and ambitious amateurs from around the world every January. First held in 2003 at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar, the festival quickly earned a reputation for its strong fields, generous prize funds, and welcoming atmosphere.
The festival was voted Best Open Event in the World by the Association of Chess Professionals four years running from 2011 to 2014. Its signature Masters event is a Swiss-system open, meaning anyone can enter and potentially face a world-class player. The tournament typically runs for eleven days in late January to early February, making it a highlight of the winter chess calendar.
Over its history, the festival has attracted legendary names. Hikaru Nakamura won three consecutive editions from 2015 to 2017. Vasyl Ivanchuk set the all-time tournament performance record in 2011 with a 2968 rating performance, scoring 9 out of 10 points. Levon Aronian, Nigel Short, and Hou Yifan have all featured prominently in past editions.
Directed by GM Stuart Conquest since 2011, the Gibraltar Chess Festival also includes a Junior Festival for under-16 and under-12 players. The event stands as proof that open tournaments can compete with elite invitationals in terms of prestige and excitement.
