Freestyle Chess

Professional Chess960 tour co-founded by Magnus Carlsen

Freestyle Chess is a professional Chess960 (Fischer Random) tour co-founded by Magnus Carlsen and German entrepreneur Jan-Henric Buettner. Through the Freestyle Chess Players Club (FCPC), an exclusive membership body of 26 top players, the organization has created the first major professional circuit dedicated entirely to Chess960.

The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour runs across five continents, with stops at prestigious venues including Schloss Weissenhaus in Germany, Paris, Karlsruhe, Las Vegas, and Cape Town. The tour culminates in a championship final where the Freestyle Chess Champion is crowned. The 2026 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, held in February at Weissenhaus, marked the first jointly organized world title event in this format under an official agreement between FIDE and Freestyle Chess.

The player roster reads like a who's who of elite chess: Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Viswanathan Anand, Alireza Firouzja, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, and more. By removing opening preparation from the equation, Chess960 puts pure chess understanding and creativity front and center, producing dynamic, unpredictable games that appeal to both players and spectators.

Freestyle Chess has rapidly established itself as a premium brand in competitive chess, combining world-class competition with luxury event production. The tour represents a significant step forward for Chess960 as a recognized competitive format, with FIDE backing lending it institutional legitimacy alongside its star power.
