Isle of Man International Chess

Premier Open Tournament on the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man International Chess Tournament has been one of the premier open chess events in Europe since its launch in 2014. Held in Douglas on the Isle of Man, the tournament consistently draws top-level grandmasters and ambitious title seekers. Early editions were sponsored by PokerStars and later by Chess.com, attracting fields that included Magnus Carlsen (who won in 2017), Viswanathan Anand, Hikaru Nakamura, and dozens of other elite players. The event gained further prestige when it became the host venue for the FIDE Grand Swiss in 2019 and 2023, making it a direct qualifier for the Candidates Tournament and the World Chess Championship cycle. Wang Hao won the inaugural Grand Swiss in 2019, while Vidit Gujrathi claimed victory in 2023. Organized by Isle of Man International Chess Limited and supported by the Scheinberg family, the tournament is known for strong fields, generous prize funds, and norm opportunities that draw hundreds of players from across the globe. The Isle of Man will host the FIDE Grand Swiss again in 2027, confirming its position as one of the most important recurring chess events on the calendar. Beyond the marquee event, the Isle of Man chess community runs regular Rapid Play Weekenders and supports the Isle of Man Chess Association, which fields teams in international competitions including the Chess Olympiad.
