Witty Alien

Witty Alien is the online persona of CM Volen Dyulgerov, a Bulgarian Candidate Master and chess content creator who became one of the most recognizable figures in online chess. Born in 1999, Dyulgerov left a career in web development to pursue content creation full-time, building a massive following across YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, and Instagram with his energetic personality and distinctive alien-themed branding.

Dyulgerov is best known as the inventor of the Alien Gambit, a sharp knight sacrifice in the Caro-Kann Defense (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Ng5 h6 6.Nxf7). The gambit went viral in 2024, generating over 100,000 games in a single month on Chess.com and catching the attention of top players like Hikaru Nakamura and Eric Rosen. White wins more than 80% of games in some lines at blitz and bullet time controls, though most experts consider it unsound in classical play. The opening was officially recognized as a named book move, a rare achievement for any content creator.

Over the course of three years, Witty Alien produced more than 2,000 YouTube videos and built a loyal community through his Chess.com club "Witty Aliens" and Discord server "the Spaceship." He was also named Chess.com Creator of the Month and authored courses on Chessable. In September 2025, Dyulgerov announced his retirement from content creation, citing health issues caused by grueling 24-to-30-hour streaming marathons. His legacy lives on through the Alien Gambit and the community he built.

Several months later, he made a return to content creation and was welcomed by the entire chess community, including TakeTakeTake, where he travelled to Norway to visit their offices and stream Titled Tuesday.
