Henrik Carlsen
Chess Father & Manager
Henrik Carlsen is the father and longtime manager of Magnus Carlsen, the highest-rated chess player in history. Born in 1962 in Bergen, Norway, Henrik worked as an engineer in the oil industry and later as an SAP consultant before restructuring his career to support his son's chess development full-time.
Henrik introduced Magnus to chess around age four and a half and recognized early that his son had extraordinary potential. In 2003, the Carlsen family rented out their apartment and spent a year traveling across Europe, combining homeschooling with chess tournaments. Henrik's parenting philosophy is captured in his famous advice to chess parents: "Let the kid own the process and the result." He avoided pushing Magnus, did not criticize results after games, and prioritized his son's autonomy in managing his own development.
As Magnus rose through the ranks, Henrik took on management duties including media relations, sponsorship negotiations, travel logistics, and tournament support. He secured Magnus's first major sponsorship with Microsoft when Magnus was 13. He later handed formal management to Espen Agdestein but continues to handle practical details at tournaments, filtering proposals and distractions so Magnus can focus on playing.
Henrik holds a FIDE standard rating of 2063 (rapid 1978, blitz 1996) and is currently inactive in rated tournaments. He has been involved in the development of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour and remains one of the most recognized and respected chess parents in the world.
