Tata Steel Chess

Wimbledon of Chess

Tata Steel Chess is one of the most prestigious and historic chess tournaments in the world, held annually in the Dutch seaside village of Wijk aan Zee. Often called the "Wimbledon of Chess," the tournament has been running since 1938, making the 2026 edition its 88th. Originally known as the Hoogovens Tournament (after its founding sponsor), it became the Corus Chess Tournament in 1999 and adopted its current name in 2011 when Tata Steel took over.

The tournament features two elite sections: the Masters, which attracts the world's top grandmasters, and the Challengers, where rising stars compete for an invitation to the following year's Masters. The 2026 Masters was won by GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov with a dominant 9/13 score, after coming agonizingly close in the three previous editions. GM Andy Woodward won the Challengers with 10/13, earning his spot in the 2027 Masters. With an average age of just 23 years, the 2026 Masters field was the youngest in the tournament's history.

What sets Tata Steel Chess apart from other super-tournaments is its accessibility. Hundreds of amateur players and thousands of visitors travel to Wijk aan Zee each January to play in open amateur sections alongside the elite grandmasters, all under one roof. World champions like Magnus Carlsen (who holds the record with eight tournament victories), Viswanathan Anand, and Garry Kasparov have all competed here. The next edition is scheduled for January 2027.
