National Governing Body for Chess in England
The English Chess Federation (ECF) is the national governing body for chess in England. Formed in 2004 as the successor to the British Chess Federation (originally founded in 1904), the ECF coordinates chess activities across the country, from local club events to international competitions.
The ECF manages the national rating system, publishing ratings for players who compete in affiliated competitions across England. Their grading system covers both over-the-board and online play, with monthly updates across multiple time controls. The federation selects and finances England teams for major international events including the Chess Olympiad and European Team Chess Championship.
Beyond competitive chess, the ECF supports clubs and communities throughout England. They run a weekly schedule of online tournaments on both Chess.com and Lichess, host the National Online Championships, and organize the Online Grand Prix series. Membership is available directly or through local organizations, with Gold membership required for FIDE-rated events and Silver for standard competitions.
