Norwegian Chess Federation
Norges Sjakkforbund
The Norwegian Chess Federation (Norges Sjakkforbund, or NSF) is the governing body for competitive chess in Norway. Founded in 1914, it is one of the oldest and most respected chess organizations in the world. Norway has long been a powerhouse in international chess, most famously as the home country of Magnus Carlsen, the highest-rated player in history.
NSF oversees more than 200 chess clubs and approximately 8,000 members nationwide. The federation organizes the Norwegian Chess Championship, the Eliteserien (Norway"s top chess league), and a wide range of tournaments for players of all ages and skill levels. In January 2025, NSF merged with Ungdommens Sjakkforbund (the Norwegian Youth Chess Federation), unifying youth and adult chess under a single organization.
Beyond competitive play, NSF runs outreach programs through its "Sjakk og Samfunn" (Chess and Society) initiative, making chess accessible through low-threshold community activities. The federation is headquartered in Oslo and maintains active social media channels on Instagram, X (Twitter), Facebook, and Twitch, where it streams tournaments and events for the Norwegian chess community.
