Scid vs PC
Free open-source chess database manager and analysis toolkit
Scid vs PC is a free, open-source chess database application and the most actively maintained fork of the original SCID (Shane's Chess Information Database). Started in 2009 by Steven Atkinson of Australia, Scid vs PC has evolved into the go-to desktop tool for serious chess players who want to manage, study, and analyze large collections of games without paying for commercial software.
The application can handle enormous databases, with community-created game collections covering over 10 million over-the-board games and more than 7 million online games. You can run engine analysis with Stockfish or any UCI engine, browse opening trees, search games by player, opening, rating, result, or position, and export to PGN or other formats. The interface is built on Tcl/Tk and runs natively on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Beyond database management, Scid vs PC includes a Computer Tournament mode, a rewritten Gamelist widget for faster browsing, FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) integration for online play, and an analysis widget. The latest stable build was updated in January 2026, confirming the project is still actively maintained after more than 15 years of development.
For coaches and players who do serious opening preparation or study annotated games, Scid vs PC is one of the most complete free alternatives to ChessBase. It does have a steeper learning curve than web-based tools, but the depth it offers for game research and preparation is hard to match at any price.
