ChessTraining.app
Free open-source chess training with Natural Play Learning
ChessTraining.app is a free, open-source chess training platform built around a unique approach called Natural Play Learning (NPL). Instead of drilling random puzzles, NPL uses spaced repetition to reinforce tactical patterns in the context of real game positions. The result is training that mirrors how strong players actually think at the board.
The platform includes several focused training modules. The Woodpecker Method trainer presents tactical puzzles, then cycles back through the same positions at faster intervals until pattern recognition becomes automatic. The Visualisation Trainer takes a different angle entirely: it shows you moves in notation, asks you to visualize the resulting position in your head, and then find the winning tactic without ever seeing the board. It is one of the few tools that directly trains mental visualization, a skill most players neglect.
For opening study, the Course Trainer lets you import your own PGN files and turn them into interactive courses. You can drill your personal repertoire lines until they become second nature. A ranks and badges system tracks your progress across all training modes, giving you concrete milestones to work toward.
The entire codebase is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and available on GitHub. Built by Keeghan McGarry, ChessTraining.app represents a thoughtful, community-driven alternative to commercial training platforms. Whether you want to sharpen your tactics, build visualization skills, or master your opening repertoire, everything here is free and accessible.
