Ella Victoria Carlsen

Ella Victoria Carlsen is the wife and media manager of GM Magnus Carlsen. Born Ella Victoria Malone in 1998 in Hong Kong to a Norwegian mother and American father, she grew up across Singapore, Norway, and the United States before becoming one of the most important behind-the-scenes figures in professional chess.

Ella manages Magnus's tournament schedule, media appearances, and YouTube strategy. For a player whose brand extends well beyond the board into clothing, apps, and esports, that operational role is significant. The couple went public at the Freestyle Chess GOAT Challenge in Germany in February 2024 and married on January 4, 2025 at Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo, with Netflix documenting the ceremony. They welcomed their first child in September 2025.

She is also an active chess player on Chess.com under the handle "ellabellabangbang," with a peak rapid rating of 1,133 and a 60.5% win rate across hundreds of games. Her preferred time control is 15+10 rapid. As chess continues to professionalize, Ella represents a new kind of role in the sport: part manager, part strategist, part brand architect.
