GMDing Liren
Former World Champion
Ding Liren (born October 24, 1992, in Wenzhou, China) is a Chinese Grandmaster and the 17th World Chess Champion. He made history in April 2023 by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in a dramatic rapid tiebreak at the World Chess Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, becoming the first Chinese-born male player to claim the world title. The classical portion ended 7-7, and Ding won the rapid playoff 2.5-1.5 with a stunning victory as Black in the final game — a result that resonated across China and the global chess community alike.
Before the world title, Ding had already cemented himself among the all-time greats. He achieved a peak classical rating of 2816 in November 2018, reaching world No. 2 behind only Magnus Carlsen. Between August 2017 and November 2018, he recorded a 100-game unbeaten streak in classical chess (29 wins, 71 draws) — the longest in top-level chess history at the time, before Carlsen later surpassed it. A multiple-time Chinese champion and Chess Olympiad stalwart, Ding represented China with distinction on the world stage for over a decade, including winning the 2019 Grand Chess Tour and qualifying for the Candidates Tournament.
Ding's reign as champion was tested in December 2024 when he faced 18-year-old Indian prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju in Singapore. After a grueling match, Gukesh prevailed to become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, ending Ding's 19-month tenure. The lead-up to the defense and its aftermath brought Ding's well-documented mental health struggles into sharp focus. He has spoken candidly about suffering from exhaustion, insomnia, and depression — taking a nine-month break from competitive chess and seeking medical treatment. His openness about these challenges has helped destigmatize mental health discussions in the chess world.
In early 2025, Ding signed with LGD Gaming, one of China's most prominent esports organizations, signaling his intent to return to competition. However, as of early 2026, he has not played a single FIDE-rated classical game since losing the title, leading FIDE to officially list him as inactive. A recent interview with ChessBase in March 2026 suggests he remains engaged with the game and open to a measured return. His story — from record-breaking dominance to a world championship triumph, through personal struggle and quiet resilience — is one of the most compelling narratives in modern chess.
