GMVictor Bologan
GM | FIDE Executive Director | Chess Author
Victor Bologan is one of the most accomplished and multifaceted figures in modern chess. Born on December 14, 1971, in Moldova, he earned the Grandmaster title in 1991 and went on to build a career that spans competitive chess at the highest level, prolific authorship, elite coaching, and global chess governance. His peak rating of 2732 placed him among the strongest players on the planet, and his peak world ranking of No. 18 (April 2005) reflects a sustained presence at the top of professional chess.
Bologan's defining competitive moment came at the 2003 Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting, one of the strongest round-robin tournaments in the world. After a focused training session with Garry Kasparov, Bologan arrived in peak form. He defeated both Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik in the same event and won the tournament by a full point, an extraordinary margin at that level. This victory remains one of the most remarkable single-tournament performances by any player outside the Candidates cycle. Over his career, Bologan won more than 70 international tournaments and represented Moldova in 14 Chess Olympiads.
Beyond the board, Bologan is one of the most prolific chess authors alive. He has written 22+ books, including landmark opening manuals like The Chebanenko Slav (honoring his late coach Vyacheslav Chebanenko), Bologan's Caro-Kann, Bologan's King's Indian, and The Powerful Catalan. His 2024 autobiography Making My Move, published by New In Chess, covers his chess career, FIDE executive role, and personal journey with 88 annotated games. He also created the Bologan's Chess Academy video course series for ChessBase, covering endgames, dynamic play, and complete opening repertoires.
Since November 2018, Bologan has served as the Executive Director of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. In this role, he oversees day-to-day operations, leads global outreach tours (including visits across the Americas, Africa, and Asia), delivers masterclasses and simultaneous exhibitions, and works to strengthen relationships with national federations worldwide. He holds a Ph.D. in Sports Science from the Russian State University of Physical Education and previously served as a Member of Parliament in Moldova (2019-2021). He is present at the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Paphos, Cyprus, participating in fan-zone activities alongside Anand, Kosteniuk, Short, and Gelfand.
Bologan trained under legendary coaches including Vyacheslav Chebanenko and Mark Dvoretsky, and served as a second for Alexei Shirov, Alexander Morozevich, and Vladimir Kramnik. He founded ChessID, a digital chess passport that gives every player a unique identity across the global chess ecosystem. Built in Doha, Qatar where Victor currently resides, ChessID connects players to online platforms, over-the-board tournaments, clubs, and training resources through a single universal ID, with partners including ChessBase. His motto, drawn from his autobiography: "Believe in yourself."
