This Week in Chess
daily chess news
This Week in Chess (TWIC) is a free weekly chess publication run by Mark Crowther, published without interruption since September 17, 1994. It is one of the longest-running chess resources on the internet, and its game archive has become essential infrastructure for coaches, developers, and serious players worldwide.
Each Monday issue contains chess news from top professional events and a downloadable PGN file with every game played that week at the elite level. Issue 1635, published March 9, 2026, included 30 stories and 6,236 games. Across 31 years of publishing, TWIC has accumulated over 4 million games in its freely downloadable archive, more than almost any other curated source on the internet.
TWIC covers the full breadth of professional chess: classical tournaments, rapid and blitz events, norm tournaments, and regional opens that rarely make mainstream news. The weekly PGN files are free to download individually. A compiled database combining all issues is available via a one-time £30 donation or a £4/month subscription. Crowther posts each new issue at @MarkTWIC on X.
For the chess technology community, TWIC is infrastructure. Opening preparation tools, engine training datasets, and chess database software have all drawn on TWIC data. It remains the most complete, consistently curated source of professional game scores available to the public.
