Popular Chess is an independent chess book publisher and online bookstore dedicated to producing high-quality chess literature for players at every level. Formerly known as Everyman Chess, the imprint rebranded to Popular Chess in 2024 following a rights dispute over the "Everyman" trademark, which is owned by Random House. The rebrand came alongside a structural shift: New in Chess, Quality Chess, and the former Everyman Chess catalog merged to form a group of strong, independent chess print publishers, with Chess.com acquiring digital rights to the catalog.
The Popular Chess catalog spans over 500 titles from more than 140 authors, including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Mikhail Tal, and Yasser Seirawan. The publisher is known for several beloved series, including the Move by Move series, the Starting Out series for developing players, and the Winning Chess series. Byron Jacobs has served as commissioning editor for close to three decades, with John Emms as general editor and Richard Palliser as assistant editor.
The popularchess.com store carries physical books and eBooks, covering openings, strategy, endgames, and player biographies. Classic Everyman Chess titles are being reprinted under the Popular Chess imprint, alongside new hardback releases. The publisher distributes through Gazelle Book Services in the UK and is integrated into the New In Chess Group ecosystem.
