Peter Svidler

GM - 8x Russian Chess Champion & Commentator

Peter Svidler is a Russian Grandmaster, eight-time Russian Chess Champion, and one of the most respected voices in chess commentary. Born on June 17, 1976, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Svidler became a Grandmaster at 17 and quickly established himself as one of the strongest players of his generation.

Svidler's record of eight Russian Championship titles is unmatched in the modern era. His first title came in 1994 at age 18, and he continued winning the championship across three decades, with his most recent title in 2013. He also represented Russia in multiple Chess Olympiads, contributing to several gold medals for the Russian team.

At his peak, Svidler was ranked as high as world number four, reaching a peak rating of 2765. He competed in multiple Candidates Tournaments and World Cup cycles, reaching the semifinals of the 2011 FIDE World Cup. His playing style is known for its deep opening preparation, particularly in the Grunfeld Defense, where he is considered one of the foremost experts in chess history.

Beyond competitive play, Svidler became one of chess's most popular commentators. He joined Chess24 as a lead commentator and analyst, becoming a fan favorite for his dry humor, encyclopedic knowledge, and ability to explain complex positions in accessible terms. After Chess24 merged with chess.com, Svidler continued his commentary work on the larger platform, covering major events including the Candidates Tournament, World Championship matches, and Grand Chess Tour events.

Svidler is also known as an avid reader, particularly of fantasy and science fiction, and his wide-ranging interests have made him one of the most relatable figures in professional chess. He remains active in both commentary and occasional competitive play, and continues to be a beloved figure in the chess community.
