GMDivya Deshmukh
Indian GM, Women's World Cup 2025 Champion
Divya Deshmukh arrived at the 2025 Women's World Cup in Batumi as a promising Indian talent. She left as a grandmaster. At just 19, she defeated compatriot Humpy Koneru in the final tiebreak to become only the third Women's World Cup champion in history, and the first born after 2000. The title carried automatic GM norm eligibility, making her India's 88th grandmaster and the fourth Indian woman to earn the title.
Born in Nagpur on December 9, 2005, Divya showed early signs of elite potential. She won the National Under-7, Under-9, and Under-11 titles before making a breakthrough on the international stage. At the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest (2024), she delivered one of the most dominant individual performances in Olympiad history, scoring 9.5/11 on board four to help India win the open gold and contributing significantly to the women's team. That performance alone announced her as a generational talent.
Divya is not just a results-first player. She made headlines in 2024 when she publicly called out the sexist behavior of spectators at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, earning widespread respect across the global chess community for her honesty and courage. Her voice matters beyond the board, and she has used it thoughtfully.
In 2026, she is competing in the Women's Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, the direct qualifier for the Women's World Championship match. At 20 years old, she is already playing for the world title. Her trajectory suggests she is only getting started.
