GMNigel Short
GM - Former World Championship Challenger
Nigel David Short is an English chess grandmaster born on June 1, 1965, in Leigh, Lancashire. He became one of Britain's greatest chess players and one of the most colorful personalities in the history of the game.
Short earned his GM title in 1984 at age 19 and quickly established himself among the world elite. His peak came in 1993 when he earned the right to challenge Garry Kasparov for the World Championship. In a move that shook the chess world, Short and Kasparov broke away from FIDE to form the Professional Chess Association (PCA) and held their match under the PCA banner in London. Kasparov won the match 12.5-7.5, but the split created a rift in world chess that lasted over a decade, with parallel world championship lines running until reunification in 2006.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Short remained a top-level competitor, representing England in numerous Chess Olympiads and competing in elite tournaments. He was known for his aggressive, classical attacking style and a preference for 1.e4 openings.
Beyond the board, Short became one of chess's most outspoken commentators. His social media presence, particularly on Twitter, made him a lightning rod for controversy and debate. He has never been shy about sharing strong opinions on chess politics, player behavior, and the state of the game.
In 2018, Short was elected FIDE Vice President on the ticket led by Arkady Dvorkovich, serving in that role until 2022. His time at FIDE gave him a direct role in shaping the future of international chess governance.
Short has also been a dedicated chess ambassador in the developing world, conducting training camps and exhibitions across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. His work promoting chess education in underserved regions earned him widespread respect beyond his competitive results.
Now in his 60s, Short continues to play occasional tournaments, provide commentary, and engage actively on social media. He holds an estimated peak FIDE rating of 2700+ from the early 1990s and remains one of the most well-known British chess players of all time.
