Federazione Scacchistica Italiana

The Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI), founded in 1920, is the official governing body for chess in Italy and a member of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. Headquartered in Milan, the FSI oversees all competitive chess activity in the country, from grassroots club play to the Italian Chess Championship. The federation manages the national rating system, coordinates regional committees across Italy, and certifies chess instructors and arbiters. With a network of hundreds of affiliated clubs from Sicily to the Alps, the FSI plays a central role in promoting chess as both a competitive sport and an educational tool. The federation organizes numerous annual events including the Campionato Italiano Assoluto, youth championships, team leagues (Serie A and Serie B), and rapid and blitz tournaments. Italy has produced several notable grandmasters and continues to be an active force in European team championships. The FSI also invests in youth development through school chess programs and partnerships with educational institutions, helping to grow the next generation of Italian chess talent.
