German Chess Federation

One of Europe's largest national chess federations

The German Chess Federation, known in German as the Deutscher Schachbund (DSB), is one of the oldest and most storied national chess organizations in the world. Founded on July 18, 1877, the DSB has spent nearly 150 years building German chess into one of Europe's strongest and most organized chess ecosystems.

With over 95,000 registered members across more than 2,000 clubs, the DSB ranks among the largest national chess federations globally. Germany has long produced elite players, with GM Vincent Keymer currently representing the country on the world stage after claiming the German Championship in 2025. The federation's Bundesliga is widely regarded as one of the strongest club team competitions in the world, regularly attracting top-rated grandmasters from across Europe and beyond.

The DSB organizes a full calendar of national championships across formats and age groups, runs arbiter and coaching education programs, and supports school chess initiatives. The 2026 Schachgipfel in Dresden, organized with the DSB, is one of the year's marquee European chess events. Germany also plays an active role at FIDE, the European Chess Union, and has hosted multiple high-profile international tournaments over the decades.
