Hans Niemann

GM - Chess Prodigy & Endgame.ai Founder

Hans Moke Niemann (born June 20, 2003) is an American chess grandmaster who has risen to become one of the top-ranked players in the world. Born in San Francisco with Hawaiian and Danish ancestry, Niemann earned his FIDE Master title in 2016, became an International Master in 2018, and achieved the Grandmaster title in January 2021 at age 17.

Niemann first gained national attention by winning the U.S. Junior Championship in July 2021 and the World Open that same year. His rapid ascent through the rankings saw him break into the classical top 100 in May 2022, and he continued to climb steadily through major international events.

In September 2022, Niemann defeated reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen with the black pieces at the Sinquefield Cup. Carlsen withdrew from the tournament the following day and later publicly stated that he believed Niemann had cheated in over-the-board play more than he had publicly admitted. Niemann acknowledged having cheated in online games at ages 12 and 16 but denied ever cheating over the board. Chess.com's investigation identified cheating in online games but found no evidence of over-the-board cheating, and independent statistical analysis by anti-cheating expert Ken Regan also found no evidence of cheating in Niemann's recent games. Niemann filed a defamation lawsuit, and the parties reached a settlement in August 2023.

Rather than let the controversy define his career, Niemann responded by climbing from 49th in the world at the time of the allegations to as high as 15th by October 2025, reaching a peak classical rating of 2728. He entered the global top 20 in 2024 and has remained a consistent presence at elite-level tournaments, including the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam events in 2025.

Beyond playing, Niemann has become a chess entrepreneur and content creator. He launched GMHans.com for chess training in 2024 and co-founded Endgame.ai, a venture-backed online chess platform that positions itself as a competitor to Chess.com and Lichess. The platform features AI-driven coaching, live tournament hosting, and community features, and has attracted attention through high-profile streamed events. He also streams regularly on Twitch and has worked with former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik as a coach.

As of April 2026, Niemann holds a FIDE classical rating of 2728, placing him among the top players in the world. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented and polarizing figures in modern chess.
