SocialChess is an online chess app that takes the ad-free, people-first approach seriously. Developed by Woodchop Software, it focuses on what makes chess great: playing against real humans, whether that is a quick live game or a slow correspondence match where you move once a day.

The social layer is genuinely built out. Each player gets a profile with photos and comments, and games are linked to real people rather than anonymous handles. A map view shows where your opponents are in the world, adding a bit of global perspective to your matches. Group chats, in-game chat, and the ability to browse an opponent's full game history round out the community features.

On the competitive side, SocialChess tracks ELO ratings with per-opponent breakdowns and supports advanced features like conditional moves and premoves for faster play. Free accounts can manage up to five simultaneous games. Premium subscribers can run up to 100. Push notifications keep you in the loop when it is your turn, and the app can queue moves offline and sync them when connectivity returns.
