Gambit Publications

London chess publisher co-founded by GMs John Nunn and Murray Chandler

Gambit Publications is a London-based chess publisher founded in 1997 by Grandmaster John Nunn, Grandmaster Murray Chandler, and FIDE Master Graham Burgess. All three had worked together previously at B.T. Batsford, then considered the world's leading chess book publisher. Dissatisfied with the direction that publisher was taking, they struck out on their own with a clear goal: produce chess books for players of every level, with no compromise on accuracy or depth.

Over nearly three decades, Gambit has grown to more than 200 titles in print, covering everything from beginner guides to advanced opening theory. Notable bestsellers include Nunn's Understanding Chess Move by Move, Chandler's How to Beat Your Dad at Chess, and John Watson's four-volume Mastering the Chess Openings. Their Chess Explained series and Karsten Muller and Frank Lamprecht's Fundamental Chess Endings have become standard references.

Gambit's editorial lineup spans the full spectrum: opening preparation, tactical patterns, endgame technique, instructional game collections, and coaching resources. The press is known for commissioning grandmasters and internationally recognised writers, ensuring each book is grounded in real playing experience. GM John Nunn serves as chess director, GM Murray Chandler as managing director, and FM Graham Burgess as editorial director.
