Quality Chess
Glasgow-based chess publisher, ECF Book of the Year 7x winner
Quality Chess is a Glasgow-based chess publisher widely considered the gold standard for serious chess study material. Founded in 2004 by Grandmaster Jacob Aagaard, Grandmaster John Shaw, and International Master Ari Ziegler, the company set out to raise the bar for instructional chess books and has delivered on that promise for over two decades.
The publisher has won the ECF Book of the Year Award seven times, a record unmatched in modern chess publishing. Titles from Jacob Aagaard's acclaimed Attacking Manual series to Mickey Adams and Philip Hurtado's Think Like a Super-GM have earned top honours from the English Chess Federation. Quality Chess also won the FIDE Book of the Year award, cementing its international reputation.
Quality Chess titles tend to be rigorous and detailed, aimed at players who want to genuinely improve rather than skim surface-level theory. Their catalog includes opening monographs, middlegame strategy, endgame studies, and game collections featuring world-class grandmasters. Notable authors include Boris Gelfand, Peter Svidler, and Artur Yusupov, among others.
As of 2024, Quality Chess joined the New In Chess group, combining resources under one of the most respected independent chess publishing umbrellas in the world. Their books remain available at qualitychess.co.uk and through major chess retailers globally.
