Free Internet Chess Server (FICS) is one of the oldest free online chess platforms in existence, launched on March 5, 1995. It was created as a volunteer-run, open alternative after the original Internet Chess Server was commercialized, and it has been running continuously ever since. With over 300,000 registered users, FICS is a serious platform with a long history and a dedicated community.

FICS uses the Glicko rating system to rate all registered players, with separate ratings for different time controls and chess variants. Handles are permanently reserved, and every rated game is publicly archived at ficsgames.org, one of the largest public chess game databases in the world. Beyond standard chess, FICS supports a wide range of variants including bughouse, crazyhouse, chess960, atomic, suicide, and loser chess. It is completely free, runs on donations, and has no premium tier or subscription wall.

FICS is not trying to compete with Chess.com or Lichess on design or features.
