ChessFromPosition
find any position
ChessFromPosition is a free web tool that pulls real chess positions from the Lichess Open Database and lets you explore them on a live board. Instead of studying opening theory move by move, you get dropped into a middle-game position from an actual game and figure things out from there.
The database holds roughly one million positions from the May 2024 Lichess file, each tagged with Stockfish evaluations. You can filter by opening, number of moves played, and evaluation range, so if you want to practice defending slightly worse positions in the Sicilian, you can do exactly that. Every position links directly into Lichess for full analysis, AI play, or sharing a challenge with a friend.
Chess960 support landed in January 2025, letting you search by starting position ID or pattern. The tool is built on open-source libraries (chess.js, chessboardjs) and integrates tightly with Lichess. It also supports FEN and PGN export for use in other software.
ChessFromPosition is completely free. The creator also publishes beginner puzzle books and a Chess960 reference guide on Amazon. If you want to practice real positions without grinding through opening books, this is one of the most focused tools out there for it.
