Vladimir Kramnik

Vladimir Kramnik

Former World Chess Champion (2000-2007)

Vladimir Kramnik is one of the most significant figures in modern chess history. Born on June 25, 1975, in Tuapse, Russia, he learned chess at age four from his father and was soon identified as a prodigy by the legendary Soviet Chess School under Mikhail Botvinnik. His talent was evident early, and he rose through the ranks at remarkable speed.

In 2000, Kramnik achieved what many thought impossible: he defeated Garry Kasparov in a Classical World Championship match, ending Kasparov's 15-year reign. Kramnik defended his title against Peter Leko in 2004, then unified the split World Championship by beating Veselin Topalov in 2006. He became the first undisputed World Champion since Kasparov split from FIDE in 1993. He lost the unified title to Viswanathan Anand in 2007.

Known for his deep positional understanding, Kramnik popularized the Berlin Defense in the Ruy Lopez, a system that transformed top-level chess opening theory. His peak rating of 2817 (October 2016) places him among the highest-rated players of all time. He announced his retirement from professional chess in January 2019 to focus on chess education for children.

In recent years, Kramnik has become one of the most vocal advocates for stronger anti-cheating measures in online and over-the-board chess. His public stance on fair play, including high-profile disputes with Chess.com and FIDE, has sparked significant debate within the chess community. In 2025, he took legal action against FIDE in Swiss civil court over governance and fair play concerns.
