GMRB Ramesh
India's greatest chess coach. Founder of Chess Gurukul. Dronacharya Award winner.
GM Ramachandran Ramesh, known throughout the chess world as RB Ramesh, is widely considered India's greatest chess coach. A Grandmaster himself with a peak FIDE rating of 2507, Ramesh made the uncommon decision to retire from competitive chess at just 32 years old to dedicate himself entirely to coaching the next generation of Indian chess talent.
In 2008, he founded Chess Gurukul in Chennai, a training academy that has since become one of the most successful chess coaching institutions in the world. The numbers speak for themselves: over 10 Grandmasters produced, more than 35 World Youth Championship medals earned, and a steady pipeline of young Indian players rising through the international ranks. Among his most celebrated students are R. Praggnanandhaa, who became the youngest International Master in history, and Vaishali Rameshbabu, a trailblazer in women's chess.
Ramesh's coaching philosophy blends rigorous classical preparation with a deep understanding of competitive psychology. He is known for his ability to identify and nurture raw talent, often working with students from a very young age and guiding them through every stage of their development. His approach is demanding but deeply personal, and many of his students credit him not just with improving their chess but with shaping their character.
In 2023, Ramesh received the Dronacharya Award, India's highest honor for sports coaching, a recognition that cemented his legacy as one of the most impactful figures in modern chess. He also served as coach for the Indian Olympiad team in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Today he continues to coach through Chess Gurukul and is available for lessons on platforms like Nurtr, where he works with serious students looking to reach their full potential.
