ohio chess charity

ChessBus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Mansfield, Ohio, dedicated to making chess accessible to everyone. Founded by FM Carl Boor, a three-time Ohio Chess Champion and FIDE Master, ChessBus brings chess programming to schools, corporations, senior centers, and even correctional facilities across Richland County and beyond.

The organization runs USCF-rated tournaments, pop-up chess experiences, corporate team-building events, and community chess nights at venues throughout the region. Their signature Arena format lets players compete in multiple 15-minute games within a three-hour window, keeping things fast-paced and inclusive for all skill levels. ChessBus also hosts large-scale events like Chess Day at the Mall and simultaneous exhibitions where Coach Boor takes on up to 50 players at once.

Beyond competitive play, ChessBus focuses on education and outreach. The organization published All Aboard The Chess Bus Workbook, Level 1, a chess workbook and coloring book created by Carl Boor, Kelly Boor, and a team of neurodivergent creators. The workbook is designed to make learning chess approachable and fun for young players through puzzles, activities, and creative exercises. Proceeds from the book support the organization's mission.

ChessBus is on a mission to establish Mansfield as a regional chess destination, partnering with local businesses and venues to host events throughout Ohio. Whether you are a first-time player looking to earn your first official rating or a seasoned competitor, ChessBus welcomes everyone to the board.
