Chessable

Chessable is a chess learning platform that applies spaced repetition, a scientifically proven memorization technique, to chess training. Founded in 2016 by David Kramaley, a psychology student who saw the potential of applying cognitive science to chess study, the platform has grown to serve over 2 million students. Its proprietary MoveTrainer technology quizzes players at optimized intervals to maximize long-term retention of openings, tactics, and endgames. According to the platform, users who train with MoveTrainer improve 4.6 times faster on average than those who do not use it.

The platform hosts over 1,000 courses by more than 400 authors, including world-class grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, and Judit Polgar. Courses cover everything from opening repertoires to endgame technique, tactics training, and positional strategy. Content ranges from free introductory material to in-depth premium courses. Chessable PRO offers a monthly subscription for broad access to hundreds of courses at a flat rate.

Chessable was acquired by Play Magnus Group in 2019, and then became part of the Chess.com family when Chess.com acquired Play Magnus Group in late 2022. Despite the acquisition, Chessable continues to operate as its own product with its own course ecosystem, branding, and pricing model. The Classroom feature supports live instruction for up to 1,000 simultaneous students, making it useful for coaches and academies as well as individual learners.

Chessable is best suited for serious improvers who want structured, systematic training. The spaced repetition system demands consistent review, but players who commit to it report significantly better retention compared to traditional study methods. The platform is available on web and mobile (iOS and Android), with offline functionality that makes daily review sessions easy to fit into any schedule.
